Junior Wildlife Scientist Video Production
The Alabama Wildlife Federation contracted Village Fox Media to produce a series of 3 videos for their educational non-profit. This is the first in the series, a video promoting the AWF’s Junior Wildlife Scientist kit — a curriculum designed to teach elementary students about the wonders of Alabama’s wildlife.
Did you know that Alabama is one of the most biodiverse states in the US? Our state has freshwater and saltwater environments, mountains, grasslands and wetlands, and the most caves of almost anywhere in the world.
Behind-the-Scenes
For this video, Village Fox Media traveled to multiple elementary schools across Alabama to interview teachers and students who have been using AWF’s Junior Wildlife Scientist kit.
As usual, my main camera for the interview setup was my trusty Sony a7siii with a G-Master f/1.2 50mm prime lens. I use a Aputure 300x for my key light, bounce fill, and an Amaran T2C tube light for a kicker.
For my main audio I use a Tascam field recorder to get natural vocals, then double the recording with a lav mic to get the warmer chest tones.

Illustration and Inspirations
For a scene in the video, we needed illustrations for 5 different types of scientists: Biologist, Entomologist, Ornithologist, Herpetologist, and Ecologist.
Illustration is one of the many services that Village Fox Media offers in conjunction with video production!

Of course, the obvious wardrobe choice for a scientist is a lab coat — but I turned to Google Images for some help in getting a more realistic ensemble for our illustrated crew.

Final Thoughts
This video production, like all productions, introduced us to some unique challenges! From filming interviews in noisy schools, matching footage from various sources, product photography, b-roll footage, to illustration and even some 3D animation, we used this opportunity to grow our ever-expanding video production toolkit.
