This spring, Village Fox Media was delighted to be invited back to develop custom motion graphics for Wellstar Leadership Day 2025 in Atlanta. Planning is key when you’re designing for high-profile events with extremely large screen sizes: and for this composition, we were working with a projection area half the length of a football field!
With all that yardage, you need a serious game plan: read on to learn more about how Team VFM tackled the challenges of this design process!
The final output resolution required for this projection was a whopping 15,000 x 1080 pixels, which presents a challenge of scale in animation and video editing. Digital canvases built to this size quickly bog down software like After Effects and Premiere Pro, even with the most powerful GPUs and processors.
Another obstacle was frame rate shudder. Typically, we’d use a frame rate of 24fps (frames per second): however, at this scale, any fast-moving text or other high-contrast imagery at 24fps has the potential to be overwhelming. Our own Gavin Richardson has a sensitivity to flashing lights, which can be especially aggravated by this jittering effect.
Then, Gavin got to work creating the individual elements of the presentation in After Effects, before laying out the final composition in Premiere Pro. Once the elements were composited with the correct timing, they were rendered at full resolution, then imported from AE to Premiere.
Next, Gavin created proxies of the elements at 1/4 the resolution, enabling the project to play through smoothly no matter how complex the scene became. Then on export, we switched the proxies back to the original full-resolution footage — our resulting export times were about 2 hours each depending on scene length, but overall it was more manageable than expected for an animation this large.
We developed the following workflow in order to manage this project and outmaneuver these constraints:
First, we decided on a final frame rate of 60 fps to ensure a more graceful playback performance. This change avoids the shudder effect of 24 fps at this scale, and provides a more accessible experience for all viewers, an essential consideration for these large events.
Our video output was finally imported into Resolume for projection, and played exquisitely throughout the conference this April.
Hundreds of guests were able to experience work we made, which is always a giant bonus for us. We love sharing what we do! Thanks to the fine folks at MELT ATL and Wellstar Health Systems for bringing us in on this exciting event. Looking for the right team to bring your big presentation ideas to life?
